Modal Verb Could

Modal verb could is used to show possibility or past ability as well as to make suggestions and requests.

Examples:

  • Extreme rain could cause the river to flood the large area.  (possibility)
  • Ibrahim could play football by the age of 12.                      (past ability)
  • You could see a movie or go out on picnic.                        (suggestion)
  • Could I use your phone to call my mother?                        (request)

The use of "COULD" in Present, Past and Future.

Possibility

Present

Examples:

  • Ibrahim could be the one who gets number one position.
  • Ibrahim couldn't be the one who gets number one position.

Past

Examples:

  • Ibrahim could have been the one who gets number one position.
  • Ibrahim couldn't have been the one who gets number one position.

Future

Examples:

  • Ibrahim could go abroad for further study.
  • Ibrahim couldn't go abroad for further study.

Ability (PAST)

Examples:

  • I could sing well when i was in college.
  • I couldn't sing well when i was in college.
  • I could speak French when i was a child.
  • I couldn't speak French when i was a child.

Suggestion (Past and Future)

Past

Example:

  • You could have spent your vacation in Paris.

Future

Examples:

  • You could spent your vacation in Paris.

Note: We can't give suggestion for present.

Polite Request

  • Could you wait a moment, Please?
  • Could i have a glass of water?
  • Could i borrow your laptop?
  • Couldn't he go with us?
